He still gets upset when I hold his cousin, but he nevertheless likes to give Manfred impromptu hugs without being asked!
Other self-initiated hugging events include hugging our next door neighbor's 1 year old girl and hugging me after he slaps my face around, as if to say "Sorry mom!" Sigh, we're still working on his "gentle" touch.
